Birkebeiner with Pack event - the premiere event.   Skiers in 10-year age categories. 
Skiers recreate the legend of the original Birkebeiner skiers by carrying the equivalent of the infant crown prince, a 5.5 kg (12 lb) pack.

Birkie Lite - looking for a personal challenge but want to travel "lite" without the pack?  Try the same route as BK without the pack. Skiers in 10-year age categories.


Getting to the Start Area at UCHV

The start area for the 55km Birkebeiner with Pack (BK) and Birkie Lite (BL) is located at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, located east of Edmonton on Highway 16

6:45 a.m.    Leave Edmonton to drive to UCHV
7:45 a.m.    Arrive UCHV parking lot – follow directions of parking marshals
7:50 a.m.     5 minute walk to Red Barn for coffee and muffins
8:00 a.m.    Wax skis and walk to start line on Goose Lake
8:15 a.m.    Test wax, weigh your 5.5. kg backpack
8:30 a.m.    Drop off tagged clothing bag at Clothing truck
8:45 a.m.    Place yourself on one of 14 lanes based on your estimated skiing time (self-seeding – ski with folks of similar ability please!)

What’s the route – 55 km BK?
A point to point course from the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village along the east edge of Elk Island National Park and through the scenic Cooking Lake-Blackfoot Provincial Recreation Area.

There are several places along the 55km course where spectators can see the skiers in action. The racers pass both the Blackfoot staging area and Islet Lake Staging area, both of which have easy vehicle.

The finish line for all races is at Waskehegan Staging Area, located just east of Sherwood Park.


Getting back to my vehicle after I finish the 55 km BK

A free shuttle bus service for finishers runs from the finish line (in the Stadium) back to vehicles at the Long Start at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. Runs continuously all day until 5 pm.

There is no parking directly at Waskehegan Staging Area. Spectators for finish of events must park at the Uncas Parking Lot, and take free shuttle buses to and from finish line
